It is extracted from the cotton wool filament, balls that cover cotton plant’s seeds. The cotton hand picking allows the maintenance of original fibers and preserve their quality. If cotton seeds are not treated with chemicals, they allow the soil to being more fertile and productive as well. Softer and durable garments are the result of organic agricultural standard process in which the care of the raw materials is primary. However, the manufacturing of organic cotton is sustainable for the environment, as well as the ecosystem and humans: through the use of natural processes and substances and combining both of tradition and scientific innovation.
The cultivation of traditional cotton, on the other hand, is not sustainable because of the pesticides (at least the 30% sold in the world) which cause allergens –– very dangerous due to the residues present in the filament. On the other hand, the organic cotton is hypo-allergenic, it is defended by insects by promoting the activity of birds or by using purely natural pesticides. The cultivation of organic cotton reduces gas emissions that alter the climate by 46%, reduces water consumption for irrigation by 91% and primary energy by 62%, besides the 26% reduction in production of algae –– which usually is obtained due to the excessive enrichment of nutrients found in rivers and canals.
The leading international organizations in organic agriculture have pledge the GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard, a paste-up of rules with the aim to guarantee the consumer compliance with strict environmental and social criteria applied at all levels of organic textile production, from the gathering of natural fibers to the subsequent manufacturing and packaging stages. The GOTS certification is the most important standard applied to organic textiles, supported internationally for sustainable production.
